Lobby & Advocacy : Strasbourg: the fight for LGBT rights is not over yet
Eight human rights activists from five CIS countries had an internship in Strasbourg on January 24-29. The trip was organized by the European Office of the International Lesbian and Gay Association ILGA-Europe for representatives of countries acting within the PRECIS project. The Moldovan non-governmental organization “GenderDoc-M” was represented by the women’s program coordinator Anastasia Danilova.
Activities : There is always a way out, just make a step forward!
One of the first activities carried out this year by the women’s program was the so-called social game “Make a step forward!”. Its task is to show that there is always a way out of any situation, even the most difficult one.
Activities : Information Center “GenderDoc-M”: before and after winter holidays
Municipal authorities made sure to have the new 2010 year earlier in Moldova than in other countries. By the order of the Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, a 30 m high Christmas tree appeared in the central square of the capital city on December 1. Then the windows of shops, kiosks and banks started being decorated, Christmas wreaths appeared on office doors and toy Santa Clauses started entering people’s homes through balconies and windows.
Activities : The LGBT community organized a public action in the center of Chisinau
On December 6, 15 o’clock, people passing by the Triumphal Arch, located in the Great National Assembly Square, were surprised to see a human chain made of young people with А-4 sheets on their chests with the inscription “I respect everyone’s rights” in Romanian and Russian languages.
Lobby & Advocacy : Today is the International Human Rights Day. On this day, sexual minorities do not ask for too much, they demand only what is guaranteed to them by law
There are people in Moldova who have to assert even the rights guaranteed to them by birth – these are disabled people, national and religious minorities, as well as LGBT representatives. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, they are full-fledged members of the society. But will this law have effect if the society itself does not want to consider all its members full-fledged? The Executive Director of the Information Center “GenderDoc-M”, Boris BALANETKII, reflects on this and many other issues on the eve of the International Human Rights Day in the conversation with the “Nezavisimaia Moldova” reporter.
Lobby & Advocacy : Men in passports are women in reality. Or who must solve problems faced by transsexuals?
We have already told about a new initiative group that appeared in the Information Center “GenderDoc-M” in March 2008. It was formed by transgenders. Despite no structural changes, the group itself has widened and the guys have the first achievements.
Activities : Thinking about the future… “GenderDoc-M” welcomed a regular meeting of elderly gays.
According to analyst forecasts, by 2005 every third Moldovan citizen will reach retirement age. It means that one economically active individual will have to provide sustenance for two elderly individuals. I do not know how to implement this scheme from the viewpoint of financial security for the entire population, but I am sure that the existent social problems should be taken into account as well.
Activities : To Live without Stereotypes!
As usual, the summer camp for lesbians and bisexual women was organized in the middle of September this year. According to the Women’s Program Coordinator, Anastasia Danilova, the main disappointment of the event was the impossibility to accommodate all those interested.
Activities : The ABC of Survival
In the middle of July, the Information Center “GenderDoc-M” organized the second summer school for men who have sex with men (MSM). Health Program Coordinator Olesea Bucsanu, Program Assistant Veaceslav Mulear and epidemiologist of the National AIDS Center Ecaterina Rotaru undertook the role of trainers this year. Despite the old familiar faces, the three days spent at the recreation center in Vadul-lui-Voda differed from the last year meeting greatly.
Politics : The Ministry of Justice Report: Formality or Reality?
The Ministry of Justice has published on its web site the report on 2004-2008 National Human Rights Action Plan implementation. It is worth mentioning here that Moldova has taken two responsibilities in execution of nondiscrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation – to amend legislation in order to observe sexual minorities’ rights and to promote tolerant attitude to this social group. According to the explanations presented in the report, authorities have fulfilled their objectives not completely. After the detailed analysis it becomes clear that the officials have made not proved allegations in some cases.
